Yesterday I volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. I spent three hours working in the back and sorting perishable foods into boxes and onto palates to be shipped to over 400 agencies across 46 counties in Middle Tennessee.
I am not saying this to brag, but to bring attention to something I learned today. September is National Hunger Action Month. I didn’t know that, I’m not sure if you did either, so I’m telling you.
1 in 6 people will go hungry today, and I don’t mean in some far away place you’ve never been and don’t care about. Some child in Illinois won’t eat today. Someone in Texas will have to decide to pay for electricity instead of food for their family this month. Someone right down the street from you won’t be eating tonight.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that there are ways we can help. I have included a link to a calendar for 30 ways we can do some good this month. Every time I type the word “help” it will be linked. I’m not asking that every person do everything on the list, but pick a few that speak to you and help someone today.
Wait, there’s MORE good news? Yup, if you are local to Nashville or the surrounding areas, here’s a list a ways you can get involved with Second Harvest here in Middle Tennessee. They are a great organization doing a LOT of good for a LOT of people. Click here and do some good. (Narcissist reason – It feels good to do good for others. You can still be selfish and generous at the same time, it’s a win-win!)
Even if you aren’t near Nashville, there are Second Harvests all over the place. It is amazingly easy to volunteer some time and help out.
Here are some of the ways you can help this month:
- Change your Facebook status to bring awareness to National Hunger Action Month and include helpful links.
- Host a dinner party and take donations for your local food bank.
- Check out the September 20 article in Time magazine highlighting the work national food banks are doing.
- Build 2 Emergency Food Boxes, one for your family and one for a family you know who might find it it useful.
- Donate your United airline miles to Feeding America.
- Write a letter-to-the-editor in your local newspaper talking about the hunger issue and how it is a solvable problem.
- Take the Hunger Action Month Pledge and encourage your friends to do the same.
There is no specific “call to action” in this post. This entire post is a Call to Action. Find ways to help and if you need, contact me and we can work together to find ways to help. I am not an affiliate for Second Harvest or Feeding America, nor are they my clients. I just care about this cause and wanted you to know about it.
I also want you to take action, but I can only control what I can control. Have a wonderful day and keep your eyes open for the 1 in 6 people you see every day that is struggling with hunger whose life you can change today.
P.S. It won’t put food in the child’s belly in Illinois, but pressing the Facebook “Like” button will share this info with more people and give them the opportunity to help.
