Another month has almost passed and that means it’s time for another UnReview!  I’m sure you’re as excited as me.  If you missed last month’s UnReview of Scott Stratton’s Unmarketing, you missed the beginning of the future, be sure to check it out and see how it all began.

This month I chose to re-read and UnReview Gary Vaynerchuck’s (@garyvee) Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion (Amazon Affiliate Link) not only because it’s an amazing book, but also because I’ve been talking to a lot of people about it recently and it seemed appropriate.

Reaction1:  The first thing you notice about the book when you get it is how small it is.  You may think, “How could I possibly get a lot out of a business book that’s less than 200 pages?”  Well my friend, you would be gravely mistaken.

Once I tunneled back from China, rescuing many Vaynerchuk fans while I was there in heroic acts that cannot be depicted here, I got back to reading.  I had only made it through the first three chapters when I ended up on the other side of the world, you see.

Reaction 2:  I decided to give my hands some rest and watch a few minutes of one of Gary’s Winelibrary TV podcasts, just to see if this guy really had the gumption he talks about in his book.

Crush It WineTV

I was maybe a little hooked.  Not only did this guy Type-the-Type, he Podcasted-the-Podcast.  At that point I was sold and I dedicated myself to learning as much from him as I possibly could.  But first I took a shower.

Reaction 3:  There were things in the book that I took notes on and mapped out strategies for, but a lot of the most helpful advice were things I could implement immediately: like finding my passions and dedicating my work to them.

My boss was none too pleased, but changed his tune when we saw me rock it out to Carry On Wayward Son on expert.  I would not recommend doing this at your job, though.  Find your passion and start on your own.

Reaction 4:  So I finally finish the book and all I want to do it go out and Crush It.  Gary talks a lot in the book about finding people with skills you don’t and helping each other build something great.  That’s what I really wanted to do: find others that wanted to Crush It like me.

Crushers

Now I had my crushers and I was ready to tackle the world. There was just one thing left that was bugging me…

Reaction 5:  Gary had claimed multiple times in his book that he loves talking to his fans, but I was a disbeliever.  “There’s no way,” I accused accusingly, “he has too many fans to notice if I send him an email.  So I decided to put him to the test.

Crush It Gary

Needless to say he answered. While I possibly exaggerated the meanness, if any, of my email and the violence of his response [none], he did in fact respond.  Therefore solidifying his awesomeness in my mind.

Crush It! is an amazing book and I do and have suggested it to all my friends.  If you haven’t read it, Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion.  Using this link will get me some cash so I can buy new pens for the UnReviews to come.  Gary Vaynerchuck would be proud.

I hope you enjoyed this month’s installment of the UnReview.  Be sure to look for my upcoming email newsletter that will include each month’s UnReview and maybe some extra surprises, but Shhhhhh, it’s a secret.

Leave your comments below and feel free to add suggestions for upcoming UnReviews, I have some in mind, but am always looking for books to be mailed to me to draw shitty comics about.

P.S. I have it on good authority that if you don’t press the Facebook “Like” button below, Gary Vaynerchuk will come to your house and punch you in the face, and he’s bringing Bam-Bam.

You are living proof of what they say, "When opportunity meets preparation - miracles happen."

You are a remarkable, brilliant man with an abundance of talent - and I am most definitely a fan of your UnReviews. (And you - but that probably goes without saying, which did not stop me from saying it, apparently.)

Your humour is fabulous too - but if you ever find yourself with a spare moment or 12, you might want to invest them in art lessons ...

Sally, thank you for your continued support and amazing comments. You always lift my spirits. I can only chalk the UnReviews up to luck and a little bit of good timing, but I will continue to do them as long as they bring in traffic.

About art lessons, my wife is an artist and is extremely good, so it aggravates her to no end that my terrible comics and witty banter gets so much attention.

dude this inspires me for my site , maybe you can help me further my business http://nicolaiwinkler.com

Nicolai, I would love to help you out. My calendar's filling up fast but you are in an area of business that I LOVE: food. :)

Just head over to my contact page or email me and let me know how I can help. Welcome to the community.

Congrats on getting the shout-out from Gary. Well done sir. You've been added to my Google Reader feed.

Thanks so much Nick, I will do my best not to let you down. If there's ever anything you want me to write about that fits in with the site, just let me know.

Welcome to my community! :)

OK I am new to facebook - less than one week and I am in the 3rd chapter of Crush it! The more I read the more I don't know. Why did I actually spend money on a college degree?

Haha. I felt the same way. I spent years and years in school learning what I was told were "the essentials" and then I had to re-learn everything once I figured out social media and blogging were my passions.

Well Joey, I just posted you on Twitter and Facebook....You we me one :).

That was awesome. When are you coming to my house? I am really into the "crush it" mentality. I am a true follower and believer. Build it and they will come. Believe and they willl follow. My friends think I am nuts but who cares, huh? I will be laughing all the way to the bank! Thank you!!

You are more than welcome Jen. I'm really happy you stopped by today and hope you stick around in the future and become part of my community. I've read "Crush It!" a few times now and am surprised each time by how much I get out of it.

Thanks again for stopping by! See you soon.

Nice concept and lots of fun. I enjoyed your UnReview of 'Unmarketing', too!

Thanks Laurie, I'm glad you enjoyed them. Welcome to my community. I hope to see you here again some time.

This was fantastic. The stick drawing cartoons multiply the wittiness of your writing. I love it.

Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate that. I hope you keep reading, welcome to my community.

I definitely will be coming back here Joey!

That's what I like to hear. There'll be a new UnReview each month, so keep your eyes peeled.

At first I saw the link from Gary and I was like, "Joey who?" So then I read he article and thought, "Wow this guy draws really great!" Now, after reading the comments, I'm like, "Chapter 9?"

Thanks Danny! I did one last month for Scott Stratton and it really took off, it's becoming a monthly feature on the site.

Haha, I like it when people start off saying "Joey who?" Hopefully you have a little better understanding of my weirdness now. If you want to understand the "Chapter 9" reference, I guess you'll have to get Gary's book.

This is quite simply the best book review ever written. Period.

You had me at China. :)

Thanks Lisa. If you liked this one, be sure to check out the one from last month.

You're on to something here. I want one.

You got it man! Anything for you. If you have a book you want UnReviewed, send it my way or tell any author friends of yours the same.

Thanks for stopping by today.

Gary has just driven a lot of trafic to your site he just link to it :)

I know! I didn't even know he'd see it, but now I'm pumped!

Hoped you liked the UnReview, be sure to check the other one.

Joey, way to bring it bra'! Remember valuable things come in small packages...jeez..ask my wife..
'Crush It' is off the hizzy ma nizzy, but I can't wait for his next book in a few months! GaryV, please send me one before we get you on our show! http://goo.gl/wKLI

Thanks for the comment man. I really appreciate it. I have to agree about Gary, he rocks it off the chain!

Thanks for stopping by today.

Hey Joey! Crush It is indeed my favourite marketing/ PR book and this is by far my favourite ever review of Crush It (or any book for that matter). Great to see that you emailed and got a response from Gary.

My favourite part of the book is Chapter Nine: The Best Marketing Strategy Ever

CARE.

Jason, thanks for the comment. I also love Crush It! I also agree that Chapter 9 is amazing. One of the most helpful chapters in any book ever.

Feel free to share this review and check out the one from last month, it was about Unmarketing.
